University of Cape Coast
University of Cape Coast

The University of Cape Coast (UCC) was established in 1962 and is located in the historic city of Cape Coast in the Central Region of Ghana. It is a nationally oriented public comprehensive university. Initially founded as a university college, its primary mission was to train highly qualified teachers for secondary schools, teacher training colleges, and technical institutions. In 1972, UCC attained full independent university status through an Act of Parliament, gaining the authority to confer its own degrees, diplomas, and certificates.

With the expansion of its faculties and the diversification of academic programs, the university is now equipped to train professionals not only for the education sector but also for healthcare, agriculture, business, and law. Situated on a hill overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, UCC operates two campuses—Southern and Northern—and is located near the historic Elmina and Cape Coast Castles. As a major force in Ghana’s higher education landscape, UCC has produced numerous ministers, members of parliament, ambassadors, CEOs, and notably, Ghana’s first female vice president.
